Les Freres Engel
Alsac, France-Demeter Certified Biodynamic
REPRESENTATION - NATIONAL
Les Frères Engel is a family domaine in Orschwiller, led by brothers Pierre and Jacques. Founded in 1958 at the foot of the Haut-Kœnigsbourg castle, the estate traces its roots to 1900, when Alphonse and Joséphine Engel first planted vines. Through the mid-20th century, the family shifted from mixed farming to full-time grape growing; by the 1960s, viticulture was their core vocation. In the 1980s, brothers Hubert and Christian modernised and expanded the domaine. Today, Hubert’s sons—Pierre (winemaking since 2018) and Jacques (joined 2021)—carry the third-generation torch, blending youthful energy with terroir-focused values and a philosophy that marries tradition and innovation.
VINEYARDS & PRACTICES
The domaine farms 20+ hectares on the lower Vosges slopes around Orschwiller. A significant share lies on:
Grand Cru Praelatenberg (Kintzheim): granite/gneiss, east–southeast exposure, 250–350 m; planted to Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewürztraminer and Muscat—yielding mineral, age-worthy wines.
Schlossreben (Saint-Hippolyte): historic granitic parcel below the castle; Riesling shows lifted aromatics and a stony core.
Bocksberg (Orschwiller): gneiss hillside; Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir with sleek lines, ripe berries, spice and fine tannin.
Moenchborn (Orschwiller): cooler, alluvial site by a spring; Sylvaner is floral, crisp and refreshing.
All sites are certified organic and biodynamic. Work is by hand with cover crops, compost, and selective horse ploughing to preserve biodiversity and sharpen terroir expression.
WINEMAKING & ETHOS
Minimal intervention underpins the style: indigenous yeasts, no chaptalisation or additives, no sulphites; wines are unfined and unfiltered. Ferments proceed slowly with extended lees time. Élevage is tailored—stainless steel for freshness, neutral oak for texture—avoiding overt oak influence. Patience and site clarity drive release decisions, alongside thoughtful experiments such as skin-contact whites.
THE WINES
Classic Wines (Alsace AOC): Purity first—dry, precise, table-friendly wines. Stainless steel or neutral élevage preserves varietal clarity and refreshment; moderate alcohols, clean and linear textures. Early-drinking appeal (1–4 years), with select whites gaining extra shape at 3–6 years.
Lieux-Dits (Single-Site): Parcel selections that foreground micro-terroir over winemaking artefact. Longer lees time, minimal oak and gentle extraction build finesse and outline. Whites carry salinity and stony edges; Pinot Noir is fine-boned and supple. Small volumes, vintage transparency, optimal drinking 3–8+ years.
Grands Crus (Praelatenberg): Structured, mineral and age-worthy. Granite/gneiss gives a saline spine, tight acidity and dry extract; élevage is restrained for purity. Youth is linear and tense; with time, the wines unfold into layered, harmonious profiles.
