HISTORY & FAMILY
Lightfoot Wines was born from the vision of Brian and Helen Lightfoot, who in 1995 transformed their cattle farm in East Gippsland into the Myrtle Point Vineyard, inspired by its rich terra rossa over limestone soils. Their sons, Rob and Tom Lightfoot, returned to the region in the late 2000s and took the reins—Tom overseeing the vineyard and winemaking, Rob leading sales and marketing. The addition of winemaker Alastair Butt in 2007 marked the shift from grape growers to artisan producers. The family’s approach marries generational stewardship with contemporary wine craft, rooted in place and animated by creative drive.

VINEYARDS & PRACTICES
The 30-hectare Myrtle Point Vineyard sits atop an exposed limestone bluff overlooking the Mitchell River valley—the only limestone-rich site in Gippsland. Deep terra rossa clay soils underpin dense root systems and naturally balanced ripening. Farming is consciously sustainable and biological: no herbicides, close cover cropping, and low yields that ensure energy and complexity in the fruit. Vines are planted to high-density Dijon clones (e.g., Chardonnay 96, Pinot Noir MV6), Shiraz, and newer non-traditional varieties. Every block is managed individually, tracking subtle differences in texture, altitude, and exposure to inform site-driven selection and later vinification.

WINEMAKING & ETHOS
Lightfoot’s cellar philosophy blends tradition with experimentation. Tom and Alastair work in small-scale fermenters, using both wild and cultured yeasts, with techniques ranging from whole-bunch to carbonic maceration. They exercise restraint with oak—typically 15–20% new French oak—allowing fruit and terroir to remain the voice. Wines are often bottled unfined and unfiltered, emphasising purity, mouthfeel, and regional identity. This approach yields wines that are vibrant, textured, and soulful—born of site and expressed through minimalist intervention.

2024 LIGHTFOOT AND SONS ‘MYRTLE POINT’ CHARDONNAY - GIPPSLAND, VICTORIA

The 2023 Lightfoot & Sons “Myrtle Point” Chardonnay from Gippsland pours a pale straw with green hues. It offers bright, fresh aromatics of stone fruit—like white peach and nectarine—along with subtle citrus and nougat notes, all complemented by delicate toasty oak. The palate is medium-bodied yet crisp, featuring a creamy texture from lees stirring and balanced acidity that leads into a clean, mineral-tinged finish. Barrel fermentation and 15% new French oak lend complexity without overpowering the fruit, making this wine both vibrant and refined.

2021 LIGHTFOOT AND SONS ‘HOME BLOCK’ CHARDONNAY - GIPPSLAND, VICTORIA

Excellent concentration of flavour. No lack of style. Green melon, white peach, a wealth of seductive/creamy oak, and a bit of dazzle dazzle to the finish…

The Home Block was the first planting of vines at the Myrt le Point property in 1995. Positioned on a limestone bluff high above the Mitchell River, the Home Block consistently produces Chardonnay of concentration and power.

2018 LIGHTFOOT AND SONS ‘CLIFF BLOCK’ PINOT NOIR - GIPPSLAND, VICTORIA

“Estate-grown MV6 planted ’97, eight picking days 4-25 Mar, the majority destemmed, open-fermented with cultured yeast, 15% fermented with 30% whole bunches to allow some carbonic maceration, matured in new and used French oak, bottled unfiltered. This complex vinification has resulted in a very complex pinot, with red and purple fruits, abundant spices and savoury/earthy fine-grained tannins. This in turn leads to good length and texture.

2023 LIGHTFOOT AND SONS ‘RENEGADE PINOT NOIR - GIPPSLAND, VICTORIA - 100% WHOLE BUNCH

100 days post ferment maceration before going into French oak, 40% new. The effort was worth it. This is a pretty spectacular shiraz. Immensely peppery and textural with an excellent push of plush-feeling fruit and a highly complex, not to mention persistent, finish. It feels absolutely cool climate and bunchy but it also feels absolutely ripe and generous. It will no doubt age but there isn’t a lot of reason to wait; it’s beautiful now.
